Amhara Resistance Forces Capture Multiple Districts in Four-Day Ethiopian Offensive

In a major escalation of regional tensions, the Amhara Fano National Movement has taken control of 20 districts across Ethiopia’s Amhara region during a concentrated four-day military campaign.

The recently unified resistance movement, now operating under centralized leadership, has significantly expanded its territorial control in northern Ethiopia, challenging the federal government’s authority in the region.

Key Developments

The offensive resulted in the capture of several strategic locations, including the important hub of Debre Tabor. Local sources report that the resistance forces have been welcomed by civilian populations in newly controlled areas, where they are beginning to establish administrative functions.

During operations at Gafat Federal Prison, more than 1,500 detainees were freed. The movement also acquired substantial military equipment, including over 2,300 assault rifles of various models, 82 PK machine guns, 13 heavy Doshka weapons, and 23 sniper rifles.

Government Response

Federal forces responded with extensive aerial operations, launching more than 16 drone strikes targeting infrastructure in Debre Tabor. In a controversial tactic, government forces destroyed their own police stations and civil administration buildings to prevent them from falling into resistance hands intact.

Background Context

The conflict in the Amhara region has been ongoing for 30 months, beginning with the 2023 dissolution of regional special forces units. What started as localized militia opposition has evolved into a broader movement under the unified command of Chairman Zemene Kassie.

The AFNM represents a consolidation of previously fragmented resistance groups into a single organizational structure with both military and political wings. Political leadership is headed by Geta Asrada, who is working to engage with international observers.

Looking Ahead

Analysts are monitoring whether the movement can maintain control of urban centers while under pressure from federal forces. The government continues to implement measures including road blockades and communications restrictions in an effort to isolate the resistance-held territories.

The situation represents a significant challenge to stability in northern Ethiopia and raises questions about governance and security across the Amhara region.
